Romana is a modern dining and living-room furniture collection with soft curves and sophisticated craftsmanship that emphasises ercol’s skill in working with solid timber.
Romana is made from pale oak and finished in a clear matt lacquer to both protect and show off the beauty of the oak furniture. The handles are cut out from the solid of the wood doors and drawer fronts and visually form part of the dynamic look of the cabinets. All drawers are made from solid dovetailed timber. Doors and drawers feature soft-close mechanisms.
ercol is delighted to announce that its large Romana sideboard has been awarded the Design Guild Mark for excellence in furniture design. Originally introduced by the Furniture Makers Company, the Design Guild Mark exemplifies quality in design and the process of furniture making.
The Romana sideboard embodies the quality, design and craftsmanship which have become synonymous with the ercol brand. The large sideboard provides lots of storage space, housing three drawers and two cupboard spaces while the defining characteristic of the Romana sideboard is the soft organic curves used along the top and legs of the piece.
Dylan Freeth, from the ercol Design studio, saw it as a priority that the design have a strong tactile element– “I spent a long time working out how to achieve a soft feel to the furniture, but still keep it looking crisp and defined. Once we had settled on the rounded shape of the table surfaces and cabinet tops, and how the ends of tables and cabinets joined precisely around this, we applied those simple flowing lines to everything in the range.”
The handles for the drawers and doors have been designed as delicate cut-out recesses which complement the subtlety of the Romana collection and are another signature of this range. The cupboard sections each have a wooden shelf mounted on pins and can be adjusted in height. The three drawers and the door hinges have soft-close mechanisms to give a gentle shut. As with other Romana designs, the legs use chamfers.
